Kindergarten is more than a springboard for success in upper grades. It is the foundation for academic
learning and must address the developmental needs of our youngest learners. This module offers an
overview of developmentally appropriate instruction for the kindergarten classroom. The main areas
of focus are setting up an appropriate environment, elements of the science of reading, small group
instruction, incorporating play and formative assessment, and self-regulation.
Participants will leave the session with:
• A basic understanding of the science of reading and the five elements of literacy instruction
• An in-depth look at a specific element of the science of reading as deemed necessary by the
audience
• Practical strategies for building a developmentally appropriate kindergarten environment
