Session Description
Crisis, trauma and grief go hand in hand, change everything and often turn our lives upside down or inside out. Families and children (of all ages) who are experiencing mental health and/or substance use challenges have typically experienced traumatic life-altering events that forever change us. Grief doesn’t get smaller; we have to learn to grow around and through it. Acceptance of grief as a life-changing experience is important and can potentially lead to challenges in years ahead with mental health and substance use/misuse. In developing authentic partnerships between families and providers, we must acknowledge and understand trauma as part of the human experience and meet people where they are, rather than where we want them to be. Additionally, in trying to respond with the best of intentions, they sometimes do so using words that are more harmful than helpful. Though we can’t be protected from negative life and loss experiences, there are things we can do to better help and increase stability for those we serve. In this session, participants will learn about the uniqueness of losing someone to deaths of despair and abandonment/estrangement loss experiences and how this impacts an individual’s life.
