The Alternative Teaching Certificate allows individuals to teach in an area of critical need and shortage in a West Virginia public school district by authorizing enrollment into an approved West Virginia Board of Education alternative certification program.
This certificate is valid for one (1) year. It can be renewed twice, for a total validity period of three (3) years.
Be physically, mentally, and emotionally qualified
Have a bachelor's degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
Have passing scores on the Praxis basic skills exam(s) required by the West Virginia Board of Education or qualify for an exemption per Policy 5202
Receive an offer of employment from a school district with an approved West Virginia Board of Education alternative certification program for the endorsement sought
Have recommendation from the county Superintendent

Hold an academic major on an official transcript related to the endorsement area and/or educational or non-educational occupational qualifications related to the endorsement area
Have passing scores on the Praxis content exam(s), as required by the West Virginia Board of Education, or qualify for an exemption per Policy 5202

Pay the processing fee online before submitting your form.
Submit your application to your employer. Your application must be uploaded by your employer’s human resources office.
