Alternative Teaching Certificate

Applicant Requirements

To receive an Alternative Teaching Certificate, you must be applying for a vacancy that has:

• Been posted at least twice in a ten-day period.
• Not received fully-certified applicants.

General Requirements

To apply, you must:

• Be a U.S. citizen or hold eligible documentation (see Policy 5202, Minimum Requirements for the Licensure of Professional/Paraprofessional Personnel and Advanced Salary Classifications)
• Be at least 18 years old
• Be physically, mentally, and emotionally qualified
• Have a bachelor's degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5
• Have passing scores on the Praxis basic skills exam(s) required by the West Virginia Board of Education or qualify for an exemption per Policy 5202
• Receive an offer of employment from a school district with an approved West Virginia Board of Education alternative certification program for the endorsement sought
• Have recommendation from the county Superintendent

General Education Endorsements Only

• Hold an academic major on an official transcript related to the endorsement area and/or educational or non-educational occupational qualifications related to the endorsement area
• Have passing scores on the Praxis content exam(s), as required by the West Virginia Board of Education, or qualify for an exemption per Policy 5202

Application Instructions

1. Download the Initial Alternative Teaching Certificate form and fill out the required information.
2. Pay the processing fee online before submitting your form.
3. Submit your application to your employer. Your application must be uploaded by your employer’s human resources office.
