Happening Now - Kanawha County
Students in Kanawha County have been busy learning through hands-on application, diving into captivating books, applying math to everyday learning, and so much more. When students enjoy the learning process, they become more engaged in comprehension and mastery of the content.
Showcasing Medical Knowledge
Honors Anatomy I students at George Washington High School engaged in hands-on learning during their classroom clinical rounds. Students led the instruction, showcasing their understanding of human anatomy with their peers.
Farm-to-School Flavor
Malden Elementary School students recently enjoyed a school farmers market event courtesy of West Virginia Harvest. Students hand-picked their own fresh produce, chosen from an array of farm-grown, local fruits and vegetables. Students learned about healthy choices along with the impact partnerships have on their school.
A Unique Spin on Learning
Kindergarten students at Bridgeview Elementary have been enjoying a different approach to writing their name, solving math problems, and staying engaged in the learning process. By covering a table with shaving cream, these students are given an interactive canvas to practice these skills and more using their fingers. This unique approach to learning has brought many smiles and much laughter to the classroom.
Diving into a Good Book
Books provide students opportunities to expand their imagination, increase their comprehension skills, and journey to far-off places. The key to a good book is finding a comfortable place to dive into the story - students at Nitro Elementary have done just that. These students are making their own adventures every day, and we are excited to watch their learning continue.
To College and Beyond
Juniors and seniors are taking their postsecondary options seriously - 1,261 of them to be exact. During the county's annual College Fair, hosted at the University of Charleston, students had several opportunities to network with representatives from 52 colleges, universities, and postsecondary organizations across five states. The event helped students access information related to financial aid, majors, scholarships, career paths, and more. We appreciate all the county school counselors who helped make this event possible for students.
Experiencing Nature Up Close
Hands-on learning helps students master classroom content. From offering their hands as a perch for butterflies and exploring how water moves through valleys, creeks, and rivers to learning what animals and insects have made West Virginia waterways home, students took classroom learning and connected it to the systems outside their classroom.
