Apply for a Temporary Renewable Teaching Certificate if you have an unrestricted, expired teaching certificate from another state that is equivalent to a West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate.
Be a US Citizen or hold eligible documentation (see Policy 5202)
Be at least 18 years old
Be physically, mentally, emotionally qualified, and of good character
Hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
Have a minimum Overall Cumulative GPA of 2.5
Possesses an expired out‑of-state certificate issued without restrictions equivalent to a West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate
Be an employee of the West Virginia public school system
Have recommendation from the county superintendent
To send official transcripts to our office, please have your college or university send them to cert.transcripts.wvde@k12.wv.us. Transcripts must be received from the institution and not the applicant.
Renewal
You may renew up to two (2) times for a total of three (3) years. To renew your certificate, you must:
Have a minimum 3.0 GPA for all required coursework
Obtain successful evaluations for each year taught under the Temporary Certificate within the West Virginia Educator Evaluation System with an earned performance rating of Emerging or above
Be an employee of the West Virginia public school system
Have recommendation from the county superintendent
