Temporary Renewable Teaching Certificate

General Requirements

To apply, you must

• Be a US Citizen or hold eligible documentation (see Policy 5202)
• Be at least 18 years old
• Be physically, mentally, emotionally qualified, and of good character
• Hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree
• Have a minimum Overall Cumulative GPA of 2.5
• Possesses an expired out‑of-state certificate issued without restrictions equivalent to a West Virginia Professional Teaching Certificate
• Be an employee of the West Virginia public school system
• Have recommendation from the county superintendent

To send official transcripts to our office, please have your college or university send them to cert.transcripts.wvde@k12.wv.us. Transcripts must be received from the institution and not the applicant.

Renewal 

You may renew up to two (2) times for a total of three (3) years. To renew your certificate, you must:

• Have a minimum 3.0 GPA for all required coursework
• Obtain successful evaluations for each year taught under the Temporary Certificate within the West Virginia Educator Evaluation System with an earned performance rating of Emerging or above
• Be an employee of the West Virginia public school system
• Have recommendation from the county superintendent
