School Nurse Certificate
Summary of Requirements
The School Nurse Certificate may be issued to an individual who has been employed as a substitute or full-time School Nurse in a county public school system.

Full Requirements
General Requirements
To apply, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or hold eligible documentation (see Policy 5202)
- Be at least age 18
- Be employed as a substitute or full-time School Nurse in a county public school system
Education Level
You must also:
- Hold a nursing diploma or associate’s degree in nursing
- Hold a valid Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the West Virginia Board of Registered Nurses or a compact state
You must submit an official transcript. To send official transcripts to our office electronically, email them to cert.transcripts.wvde@k12.wv.us. Electronic transcripts must be sent from the college or university to the Office of Certification.
Temporary Certificate
The initial, temporary nurse certificate is valid for one (1) year. To obtain it, you must:
- Meet all general requirements outlined above
- Complete the school nurse orientation professional learning activities approved by the Department
Professional Certificate
The professional nurse certificate is valid for three (3) years. To obtain it, you must:
- Meet all general requirements outlined above
- Must have held a temporary school nurse certificate
- Complete the school nurse orientation professional learning activities approved by the Department
Renewal Requirements
The professional nurse certificate may be renewed every three (3) years. To obtain it, you must:
- Meet all general requirements outlined above
- Complete a minimum of 12 continuing education contact hours in school health or pediatric medicine topics approved by the Department
- Training taken to renew the RN license since the last renewal period may be used.
