Team Nutrition

Team Nutrition is a USDA initiative that provides training and technical assistance for foodservice professionals, nutrition education for children and their caregivers, and school and community support for healthy eating and physical activity.

Team Nutrition’s goal is to improve children’s lifelong eating and physical activity habits by using the principles of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and MyPlate.

Schools are the key focal point for Team Nutrition. They are invited to enroll as “Team Nutrition Schools” at the following link: Team Nutrition Online Enrollment Form. As an enrolled school, they affirm their commitment to take the lead in making nutritional changes, conducting nutrition education activities and events, and using innovative materials from the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS).

Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC)

Schools enrolled in Team Nutrition and participate in the School Breakfast Program and National School Lunch Program, are encouraged to take the HealthierUS School Challenge (HUSSC). HUSSC is a voluntary certification initiative that recognizes schools for their efforts in improving the quality of foods served, providing students with nutrition and physical education and opportunities for physical activity.

Schools can submit an application at any time during the year for a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Gold Award of Distinction for meeting or exceeding HUSSC criteria for the different award levels. For more information regarding the HUSSC initiative and specific award criteria, visit the Team Nutrition website and click on HealthierUS School Challenge.

As of July 1, 2012, West Virginia has nationally recognized HUSSC award-winning schools in Cabell, Mason, Mingo and Lincoln Counties. Congratulations and keep up the good work!
