Morgantown, W.Va. – Morgantown High School Team 2 placed first and Morgantown High School Team 1 placed second today at the 2024 Academic Showdown (Showdown) West Virginia University (WVU) regional competition. The wins secured the Monongalia County teams a spot in the finale on April 23, 2024, at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston.
The West Virginia University event was the second of seven regionals to be held around the state. Eight teams competed in the double-elimination matches:

- Brooke High School Team 1 and 2
- Doddridge County High School
- John Marshall High School
- Morgantown High School Team 1 and 2
- University High School Team 1 and 2
This year, 90 teams representing 50 schools across 31 counties comprise the Showdown competition field, an increase of 19 new teams over last year’s field. Students in grades 9 – 12 display their academic prowess through intense rounds of questions based on math, history, sports, fine arts, pop culture and other content areas.
The Academic Showdown is a partnership between the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE), the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, West Virginia Public Broadcasting and the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History.
