Lexile and Quantile Measures
West Virginia students in grades 3–8 receive Lexile® and Quantile® measures through the West Virginia General Summative Assessment. Additionally, they may obtain these measures from various assessments used in local schools. These frameworks help educators and parents understand students' reading and math abilities, allowing for targeted support and instruction.
Understanding Lexile Measures
The Lexile® Framework for Reading provides two distinct measures—one assessing a student's reading ability and the other evaluating the complexity of a text, such as a book or magazine article. Lexile measures are expressed as numerical values followed by an “L” (e.g., 850L). These values range from below 0L for early readers (e.g., BR100L) to above 1600L for advanced readers.
For more information on the Lexile Framework for Reading, educators can visit the Lexile.com Educators Hub, while families can explore resources at the Lexile.com Parents Hub. Free tools such as decodable passages, Lexile maps, grade-level charts, and word lists are available to support reading development.
Understanding Quantile Measures
Similar to Lexile measures, Quantile® measures assess both student math ability and the difficulty level of specific mathematical skills. A student’s Quantile measure describes the math concepts they likely understand and what they are ready to learn next. The skill measure represents the complexity of mathematical topics students encounter.
Quantile measures are expressed as numbers followed by a “Q” (e.g., 850Q) and span a broad developmental range—from Emerging Mathematician (EM, below 0Q) to above 1600Q. The Quantile Framework covers mathematics from kindergarten through advanced subjects like Algebra II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus. These measures enable educators and parents to track student progress and ensure readiness for college-level coursework and career pathways.
Educators can find additional information at the Lexile.com Educators hub, while families can explore math resources at the Lexile.com Parents Hub. The Lexile & Quantile Hub offers free tools such as Quantile maps, grade-level charts, word lists, lesson plans, and activities to enhance math instruction.
Accessing the Lexile® & Quantile® Hub
The Lexile & Quantile Hub is an online platform designed to support educators and students by connecting Lexile and Quantile measures with instructional resources. West Virginia teachers can access this free platform to find reading and math tools that align with the measures students receive from assessments. By visiting the Lexile.com Hub, educators and families can explore tools that make measurement meaningful and actionable.
