Military Family Point of Contact Training
Once a school receives the Purple Star Award, the Military Family Point of Contact will begin receiving regular correspondence about opportunities to collaborate with military partners, participate in professional development in meeting the needs of military connected children and supportive resources available to military families.

Use the following information to access required training when applying for a Purple Star Award. You may also complete the training if you have taken over for someone else at your school, to become familiar with the role.

Purple Star School Introduction Letter
Military Family Points of Contact at Purple Star Schools can download and modify the Purple Star School Intro Letter template [DOCX], sending it to military families to inform them of their role within the school and the resources available to them throughout the year.

Guidance on Armed Forces Recruiter Access to Student Information
While school systems may receive requests from military organizations for student information for the purpose of recruitment in accordance with federal laws, please note that a detailed student data reports guidance document [PDF] has been developed by the WVDE to assist public school districts in responding to these requests.
You will notice the guidance recommends information requests be directed to and responded to by county officials, rather than at the school level. Please consult with appropriate district level officials to ensure these requirements are being met in accordance with federal law.

MIC3 Professional Development
The West Virginia Department of Education and Compact Commissioner collaborated with the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) to offer a free learning session for West Virginia educators covering the basics of MIC3. MIC3 supports successful transitions for military families with children transferring between public schools of different states. These unique provisions of W. Va. Code can make a significant difference in the lives of soldiers as they seek reasonable accommodations related to their active-duty orders.
