Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE), in collaboration with the Common Ground Partnership, will host events throughout the state recognizing students committing to military service in the United States Armed Forces. The events are a part of the annual Military Signing Week (MSW) on April 7 – 11, 2025.  The week celebrates enlistment as a viable career path toward post-secondary success, and events are scheduled at 46 schools around the state with 249 student signing commitments with six branches of the military.

MSW ceremonies provide learning experiences about career options and offer opportunities for the community to support dedicated students. The statewide events also meet the West Virginia Board of Education’s (WVBE) career readiness goals, encouraging a lifelong pursuit of knowledge and responding to workforce and economic demands. Students who commit to military service will utilize the skills and knowledge they have learned in the classroom to prepare themselves for career advancement.

“Military Signing Week has become a proud tradition in the Mountain State, where we acknowledge the commitment and courage of our students,” said Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “We are honored to applaud them as they move forward in their careers and discover opportunities to serve their communities and country.”

The Common Ground Partnership consists of military, government and community-based organizations dedicated to helping all students pursue education, employment or enlistment upon graduation. Their combined resources offer students career exploration opportunities, empower educators to enhance instruction and encourage educational leaders to create a climate that meets the unique needs of military-connected children and families.
