The Super STARS Council features students with exemplary leadership ability and a desire to see positive change in public education.
State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt has established the inaugural Super STARS (Students Taking Action for Readiness and Success) Council that will be comprised of Grades 6–12 students. This is a student-led advisory council that elevates student insights and ensures that their perspectives are heard by education leaders to impact initiatives, policies, and programs. Comprised of students from across the state, the council will provide diverse perspectives on public education throughout West Virginia.
The Super STARS Council will consist of 12-15 students, and it will:
Ensure direct student feedback is heard by the State Superintendent and West Virginia Department of Education leadership
Inform decision-making on key initiatives
Elevate student voice in areas such as school culture, program development, and instruction
Strengthen connections between students, schools, and statewide priorities
Application Process
School administrators are encouraged to share this opportunity with students, and must provide a letter of recommendation. The application process involves a student video submission.
Membership/Application
To be considered for the Council, students must submit a:
Microsoft Form application
Letter of recommendation from the school administrator
Video submission no longer than one minute in length
Video Prompts
Students must address these prompts in their video submission:
Why should you be selected for the Super STARS Council and represent students throughout West Virginia?
How has your school supported your success?
What are some challenges you see facing West Virginia’s public schools?
Selection Criteria
Students are chosen based on their:
Ability to communicate ideas clearly
Demonstrated leadership and/or involvement
Thoughtfulness of response
Regional Meetings
In addition to the council meetings, Superintendent Blatt will attend regional education meetings and invite local council members and their peers from surrounding schools to attend in-person. They will have an audience with state and local leaders to offer their thoughts and expertise on education topics. The Super STARS Council will meet three times each year – two virtual meetings and one in-person. Specific dates will be provided once students are selected.
