Wyoming and Boone Counties Advance to 2025 Academic Showdown Finale

Logan, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College (SWVCTC) congratulate Westside High School Team 1 (Wyoming County) for placing first and Sherman Senior High School Team 1 (Boone County) for placing second during the Region 4 competition of the 2025 Academic Showdown in Logan today. The wins secure both teams a spot in the finale at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston on April 30.
The WVDE hosted teams from the following schools at SWVCTC:
- Scott High School
- Sherman Senior High School
- Tug Valley High School
- Westside High School
- Wyoming East High School
“We are really, really psyched considering we were runner up last year. This is a really big accomplishment for us, especially since three of us are seniors, so it’s a great way to end our high school career. We are very excited,” said Westside High School Team 1 Captain Kinsey Mounts. “Competitions in academics are extremely important because they keep you mentally aware of everything going on. I believe friendly competition is a wonderful thing that motivates you and helps you grow as a student.”
"This competition continues to provide opportunities for students to showcase their academic talents while developing self-confidence and critical thinking skills. The Academic Showdown demonstrates that diligent study pays off," said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. "I am proud of how well each team represented their school and community today."
The Showdown is a partnership between the WVDE, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
