First-Class/Full-Time Permit for School Nurse
Summary of Requirements
This permit may be issued to an individual who does not meet the requirements for the Professional Student Certificate issued for School nurse but is enrolled in an approved educator preparation program and has been offered full-time employment as a school nurse, where no other certified candidate has applied. The permit is valid for one (1) year and can be renewed up to five (5) years.
Full Requirements
General Requirements
To apply, you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen or hold eligible documentation (see Policy 5202, Minimum Requirements for the Licensure of Professional/Paraprofessional Personnel and Advanced Salary Classifications)
- Be at least age 18
- Hold a nursing diploma or associate’s degree in nursing and a valid registered nurse license issued by the West Virginia Board of Examiners
- You must complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and the school nurse licensure program from an accredited college or university within five (5) years.
- Have a minimum overall cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Be employed in a school nurse where no other certified candidate has applied
- Be recommended by the employing County Superintendent
Your county can submit your official transcript or your college or university can email official transcripts to our office (cert.transcripts.wvde@k12.wv.us). Transcripts must be received from the college or university, and not the applicant.
Renewal
The permit renewal is valid for one (1) year and can be renewed up to a total of five (5) years. To renew this permit, you must:
- Have a minimum GPA of 3.0 across all required coursework
- Have completed six (6) hours of coursework
- School nurses are only required to submit three (3) hours toward meeting the requirements for a bachelor's degree in nursing during the first year, due to the lack of coursework availability. The designated college or university official's signature is required to verify your enrollment in the state-approved program.
- Maintain employment in your current position
- Have recommendation from the employing county Superintendent
- Submit unofficial transcripts or a grade printout reflecting completed coursework for renewal
