Paraprofessional Educational Interpreter Certificate

General Requirements

To apply, you must:

• Be a U.S. citizen or hold eligible documentation (see Policy 5202, Minimum Requirements for the Licensure of Professional/Paraprofessional Personnel and Advanced Salary Classifications)
• Be at least 18 years old
• Be physically, mentally, and emotionally qualified
• Hold high school diploma or equivalency
• Must pass the state aide competency test
• Hired by a county to work as a Paraprofessional Educational Sign Language Interpreter
• Have completed 36 semester hours of required paraprofessional coursework through an accredited college/university and/or WV Learns
• Meet interpreter testing and/or credentialing requirements as contained in Policy 5202
• Meet paraprofessional requirements Policy 5202

Required Training

• Must meet one of the following training requirements:
  • Complete Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) and EIPA Written Test 
  • Holds a valid National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Certification-Level III or higher;  a valid Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Certification; a valid National Interpreter Certification (NIC), or a valid state Quality Assurance Screening (QAS) Level II
