Scaled Scored Information

We are charged with determining and approving rigorous yet reasonable cut scores to ensure an accurate representation of student performance. Areas include English language arts (ELA), math, and science as mandated by state and federal law.

Standard Setting Process

We collaborated with test contractors to conduct standard setting meetings during the summer of 2018. This helped us set cut scores and establish achievement levels for both the West Virginia General Summative Assessment (Grades 3-8) and the SAT School Day (Grade 11).

"Standard setting" refers to a panel of content experts determining cut scores per grade level and content area. The panel consisted of West Virginia educators, business representatives, parents, and college/university faculty. Their work established cut scores to determine four achievement levels:

• Exceeds Standard
• Meets Standard
• Partially Meets Standard
• Does Not Meet Standard
