Bridgeport High School Advances to 2026 Academic Showdown Finale from Fairmont State University
Charleston, W.Va. – Bridgeport High School (Harrison County) won the second regional competition of West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE)’s 2026 Academic Showdown. Fairmont Senior High School (Marion County) placed second in the event held at Fairmont State University (FSU) today. These wins secured both schools an appearance in the finale at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston on May 1.
The Showdown engages students in fast-paced competition that puts their knowledge of various academic and cultural subjects to the test. Teams participate on a voluntary basis with months of practice and preparation.
The WVDE and FSU hosted teams from the following schools:
- Bridgeport High School
- Fairmont Senior High School
- Grafton High School
- Lincoln High School
- North Marion High School
- Robert C. Byrd High School
"The Academic Showdown enables students to apply classroom learning in a competitive setting that demonstrates their comprehension, team building abilities and attention to detail," said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. "Each team was an exceptional representative of their county and school, and I cannot wait to watch them continue to find success in their endeavors."
The next regional competition is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 20, at the West Virginia University Mountainlair.
The Showdown is a partnership between the WVDE, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia Culture Center and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
