Teams Advance to 2026 Academic Showdown Finale from Concord University

Bluefield High School placed first during the Region 5 competition of the 2026 Academic Showdown at Concord University.

Charleston, W.Va. – The 2026 Academic Showdown Region 5 competition was hosted by the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) at Concord University and featured a day of fierce matchups with Bluefield High School (Mercer County) winning first place. Princeton Senior High School (Mercer County) placed second in the event. Both teams will advance to compete in the Showdown finale in Charleston on May 1. 

The competition showcases students’ knowledge of numerous topics, including mathematics, science, social studies, literature, pop culture and more.

The WVDE hosted teams from the following schools:

  • PikeView High School
  • Westside High School
  • James Monroe High School
  • Bluefield High School
  • Princeton Senior High School
  • Liberty High School
  • Shady Springs High School
  • Greenbrier East High School
  • Woodrow Wilson High School

The next regional competition is scheduled for Friday, March 27, at West Virginia State University.
 
The Showdown is a partnership between the WVDE, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia Culture Center and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
