Two Schools Advance to Academic Showdown Finale from West Virginia University Competition

Morgantown High School placed first during the Region 1 competition of the 2026 Academic Showdown at West Virginia University.

Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and West Virginia University (WVU) congratulate Morgantown High School (Monongalia County) for placing first, and Weir High School (Hancock County) for placing second during the third regional competition of the 2026 Academic Showdown today. Both teams have earned a spot in the finale in Charleston on May 1.

The Showdown demonstrates the academic prowess of participating students in subject areas ranging from math to social studies and science to pop culture.

The WVDE hosted teams from the following schools:

  • Doddridge County High School
  • John Marshall High School
  • Magnolia High School
  • Morgantown High School
  • University High School
  • Weir High School
  • Wheeling Park High School

The next regional competition is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, at Shepherd University.

The Showdown is a partnership between the WVDE, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia Culture Center and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
