Two Teams Advance from the Region 2 Academic Showdown in Huntington
Huntington, W.Va. – Huntington High School Team 1 (Cabell County) and Winfield High School Team 1 (Putnam County) are headed to the 2025 Academic Showdown Finale after capturing first- and second-place finishes (respectively) in the Region 2 competition. The wins complete the final two slots for the championship on April 30, 2025, at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston.
The following schools participated in the Region 2 competition:
- Buffalo High School
- Huntington High School
- Hurricane High School
- Ripley High School
- Spring Valley High School
- Wayne High School
- Winfield High School
The Huntington competition was slated for January 10 at Marshall University but was rescheduled several times due to inclement weather.
“Everyone here is a student athlete, so it feels good to represent student athletes and scholars as well,” said Huntington Team 1 Captain Dash Carey-Squire. “We've been to the finale three times, and this is the strongest team I've been on. I feel good going into it, and I hope we feel good coming out of it.”
“The weather didn’t cooperate as we attempted to complete the last regional match-up. But it was worth the wait for these students,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “I am always encouraged that our students take it upon themselves to volunteer for the Showdown and put in the hard work to be successful in the regionals. They understand what it means to stay connected to news, politics and current events, and to study history, math and English. That makes you a well-rounded student.”

1st: Bluefield High School Team 1
2nd: Greenbrier East High School Team 1
Region 6 – Fairmont State University
1st Place: Bridgeport High School Team 1
2nd Place: Grafton High School Team 1
Region 7 – Shepherd University
1st: Spring Mills High School Team 1
2nd: Berkeley Springs High School Team 1
