Implementation of Effective Walk to Intervention Practices for Sustainable Improvement
Guyandotte Elementary Schoolidentified reading and math achievement as a core focus for improvement and successfully implemented a “Walk to Intervention” model to improve student outcomes. By adopting a master schedule that maximizes instructional time and leverages the expertise of support staff, every student receives 30 minutes of daily, targeted intervention in both reading and math.
Classroom teachers, Title I staff, and interventionists collaborate weekly to analyze data and identify skill gaps and enrichment areas. Students, including those receiving special education services, move flexibly between classrooms to access the support they need. Teachers and specialists collaborate to deliver targeted small-group instruction that not only addresses skill gaps but also reinforces grade-level standards and provides enrichment opportunities.
This model has resulted in a 17% increase in reading proficiency and an 11% increase in math proficiency over a three-year period. Through ongoing collaboration and targeted intervention, the school demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that every student masters grade-level standards and receives the support needed to achieve success.
