The State Superintendent of Schools serves as the chief educational officer of West Virginia, overseeing the state's public school system and implementing education policy. Since the office was established following the formation of West Virginia as a state in 1863, more than 30 individuals have held this position. The following list chronicles each superintendent and their years of service, from William Ryland White, who took office in 1864, to the present day.
