Areas of Support

Request a Military Speaker

Through the Common Ground Speaker Series, educators can request guest speakers from the military to speak on a variety of topics, including literacy, substance abuse prevention, anti-bullying, drop-out prevention, the American flag, and patriotic holidays or events.

Military Signing Week

During Military Signing Week in April, West Virginia schools participate in events where students can commit to public service in the United States Armed Forces.

Purple Star Award

The Purple Star Award is a designation for West Virginia schools committed to meeting the unique needs of military children and their families. Educators can access trainings on how to identify military-connected children and become a point of contact for supporting military families.

Care Packages for Military-Connected Children

Elementary school educators can request care packages when they learn a student is experiencing a deployment or transition due to active military service. The packages provide strategies, resources, and contacts to help staff support the student and their family.

Purple Up Month Toolkit

April is the Month of the Military Child. West Virginia schools are encouraged to celebrate Spirit Week and Purple Up Day during Purple Up Month to honor the courage and resiliency of military-connected children. The toolkit provides educators with templates, resources, and creative ideas on how to celebrate.

Military Interstate Children's Compact Commission (MIC3)

MIC3 ensures qualifying children of military service members can successfully transition between state public school systems. W. Va. Code §§18-10F-1 and 18-10F-2 supports meeting requirements of enrollment, placement, immunizations, extracurriculars, course credit and graduation. Review complete details and meeting information for the Council for Educational Opportunity for Military Children.
