Press Release

State Superintendent Appoints Leadership for Boone County

West Virginia Department of Education

Charleston, W.Va. – West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt has appointed Allen Sexton as the permanent Superintendent of Boone County Schools (BCS). Sexton currently serves as the director of Special Education of Raleigh County Schools. He will succeed Deirdre Cline, who is serving as the interim county superintendent during the transition. Sexton’s role in Boone County begins July 1, 2025.

At its June meeting, the West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) voted to intervene immediately in BCS following a Special Circumstance Review conducted by the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE). The review discovered several findings and areas of noncompliance related to procedural and operational issues, county board member effectives and leadership.

Sexton has served as the director of Special Education in Raleigh County for more than 11 years, as an assistant director of Special Education in the county, and as a classroom teacher. Additionally, he has worked at the WVDE as a special education compliance monitor. Interim Superintendent Cline will serve as a transition liaison who will assist county leadership in addressing issues identified in the Special Circumstance Review.

“I appreciate Superintendent Cline for lending her experience and expertise during this time of transition. She will play an important role in supporting the new county leadership,” said Superintendent Blatt. “Mr. Sexton brings more than 25 years of experience to the county, with a dedicated focus on Special Education. We know that his leadership, passion for public education, vast knowledge of Special Education and his commitment to the children of our state will guide his work and serve the community.”

Sexton holds a Bachelor of Elementary Education and Teaching and a Master of Special Education from Marshall University.

“I am committed to the students, staff and families of Boone County Schools,” Sexton said. “I will work closely with our school community to make sure all aspects of our educational and operational processes are supported and sustained to produce the best education possible for our children. We will address the challenges directly with the support of Superintendent Blatt and the WVDE so that our children benefit from the best we all have to offer.”
