The Council works to make sure parents’ voices are heard and that the needs of children with exceptionalities are understood across the state. The Council:
Holds public meetings in different parts of West Virginia so parents and families can share their experiences and concerns.
Lets parents, schools, and community members know when meetings will take place and how to participate.
Provides a safe place for families and educators to talk about what is working well and what needs improvement in special education programs.
Reviews state rules, policies, and plans that affect students with disabilities, and shares feedback with state leaders.
Writes an Annual Report with recommendations and shares it with the State Board of Education and the public.
Works with the West Virginia Department of Education to help address unmet needs of students with exceptionalities.
Serves as a parent and community voice in statewide planning and reporting for special education.
Provides access to staff who can help families connect with the Council and find information.
Shares practical information to help parents understand special education and address concerns about their child’s education.
