Apply for National Board Certification
National Board Certification is an advanced, voluntary teaching certificate that recognizes accomplished educators who meet the standards set by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Begin the application process on the NBPTS website.
Incentives for Obtaining National Board Certification
Per W.Va. §18A-4-2a, educators that are award this certification receive a $3,500 annual salary increase.
Application Fee Support
West Virginia will reimburse first-time candidates half of the application fees upon payment to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. The remainder of the application fees upon completion and submission of components.
Stipends
An additional $2,000 for educators working in a persistently low performing school is available to National Board Certified Teachers (NBCTs). The designation of persistently low performing schools is determined by our Finance Office. A list is provided to each county.
To qualify for the additional $2,000 supplement, the NBCT must:
Hold an active certification from NBPTS
Complete our Mentor Training
Be hired to serve in the capacity of a mentor to support other teachers in the school
Many county school districts provide additional supports and/or salary supplements.
