Working With Reading Order
Reading order determines the sequence in which a screen reader moves through a document. When it is wrong, content is encountered out of sequence — captions before headings, sidebar content before the text it accompanies, or columns read across rather than down.
Understanding the Source of Reading Order
Tag order in the Tags panel is the definitive source of reading order. The Order panel provides a visual representation of the tag sequence and is useful for verifying reading order, but changes to reading order should be made in the Tags panel — it is the authoritative interface for structural edits.
To open the Order panel: View > Show/Hide > Navigation Panes > Order.
Checking Reading Order
To verify reading order visually, use the Reading Order tool: go to All Tools > Prepare for Accessibility > Fix Reading Order. Numbered boxes overlay the document showing the sequence in which content will be read. Enable Show page content order in the Reading Order panel to display the numbers.
Review the numbered sequence and confirm it matches the intended reading flow. For simple documents, the numbers should proceed top to bottom, left to right. For multi-column layouts, all content in column one should be numbered before column two begins.
Reordering Content
To change reading order, drag tags to new positions in the Tags panel, or drag numbered regions in the Order panel. Both methods update the underlying tag structure.
If most of the document's reading order is incorrect, consider returning to the source document before investing significant time in Acrobat remediation. Common source document causes include:
- Images or text boxes set to Float rather than anchored inline or to a paragraph
- Text boxes positioned beside paragraph text without proper wrapping
- Complex multi-column section breaks that did not export cleanly
See Structuring Your Document For Accessibility for guidance on preventing reading order problems in the source document.
Form fields present specific reading order considerations, particularly for checkboxes, radio buttons, and the order of form fields in the Form Pane. See the Creating Accessible PDF Forms page for guidance on form field tag ordering.
Reading Order for Form Elements
Form fields present a specific reading order challenge. Checkboxes and radio buttons are typically placed visually before their label text — but screen readers in form-filling mode should encounter the label before the field so users know what they are responding to.
In the tag structure, the label text element should appear before the form field element, regardless of visual position. The visual layout does not need to change — only the tag order. To correct this:
- In the Tags panel, locate the form field's tag
- Confirm that the associated label text tag precedes it in the tree
- If the label tag appears after the field tag, drag the label above the field in the Tags panel
Pay particular attention to checkboxes and radio buttons, where the control typically appears to the left of or above its label text visually.
