Information Collected
The West Virginia Department of Education collects personal and non-personal information to obtain data for issuing licensure, implementing education initiatives, and providing various support for our public schools.
The type of personal information we collect may include but is not limited to your name, address, date of birth, email address, social security number, telephone numbers, signature, education records, employment, race and ethnicity, and background information. If you do not wish to disclose your home address or phone number, you should provide an alternative address and phone number where you may reliably be contacted.
Use of Information
We share your non-sensitive** personal information as and when required by W. Va. Code and/or State Policy with or for the following:
- Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
- County Boards of Education
- U.S. Department of Education
- Verifications (with owner’s consent)
**information WVDE will not share: Social Security number, Date of Birth
Any document, correspondence, or records submitted in connection with an application may be open to public inspection. As a state agency, we may be required to provide your information to authorities after receiving a legal request, a court order, or a subpoena.

Maintaining and Securing Information
Documentation containing personal sensitive and non-sensitive information is scanned and stored on a secure computer server. An encrypted security program is used to protect your personal information.
