Occasionally some West Virginia public schools are required to participate in certain international assessments administered in the United States by National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) under the governing bodies of International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCED). These assessments include but are not limited to Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), Program for International Student Assessment (PISA), Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), Teaching and Learning International Survey (TALIS), International Computer Information Literacy Study (ICILS), International Early Learning Study (IELS).
