According to the National Task Force on Assessment Education for Teachers, the term “assessment” is defined as “the process of gathering evidence of student learning to inform education-related decisions.” Assessment is an integral and essential part of the teaching and learning process.

In addition to rigorous standards and curriculum, a key component of the West Virginia Department of Education’s instructional program is a comprehensive statewide assessment system that incorporates rigorous summative, benchmark, interim, and diagnostic assessments, as well as a meaningful formative assessment process.
