Huntington, W.Va. – Huntington High School Team 1, Cabell County, placed first, and Winfield High School Team 1, Putnam County, placed second at the 2024 Academic Showdown (Showdown) regional competition today at Marshall University. The wins earn each team a spot in the finale on April 23, 2024, at the West Virginia Culture Center in Charleston.

The Marshall University event was the first of seven regionals to be held around the state this semester. Fourteen (14) teams competed in the double-elimination matches. These included:

  • Hurricane High School Team 1 and 2
  • Point Pleasant High School Team 1 and 2
  • Spring Valley High School Team 1 and 2
  • Wahama High School Team 1 and 2
  • Wayne High School Team 1 and 2
  • Winfield High School Team 1 and 2

This year’s Showdown includes 90 teams representing 50 schools across 31 counties, an increase of 19 new teams over last year’s field. Students in grades 9 – 12 display their academic prowess through intense rounds of questions based on math, history, sports, fine arts, pop culture and other content areas.

The Academic Showdown is a partnership between the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE), the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, West Virginia Public Broadcasting and the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History.
