Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Board of Education (WVBE) and the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) congratulate three state elementary schools recently named as 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools by U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. These schools are selected based on overall academic performance as measured by state assessments.

The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are:
Pleasant Valley Elementary School
Marion County
Kellogg Elementary School
Wayne County
Gilmore Elementary School
Jackson County

Based on collective student scores, the U.S. Department of Education recognizes schools in one of two categories:

  • Exemplary High-Performing Schools: These schools are among the highest-performing schools in the state, measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
  • Exemplary Achievement Gap-Closing Schools: These schools are among the highest-performing schools in the state in closing achievement gaps between a subgroup and the overall student population of a school.
All three West Virginia winners are classified as Exemplary High-Performing Schools.

“The National Blue Ribbon Schools Award is a testament to the exceptional achievements of students and educators at each of these schools,” said Secretary Cardona. “The 2024 National Blue Ribbon Schools are raising the bar for our nation’s students, serving as models for effective teaching and intentional collaboration in their schools and communities. As we celebrate their achievements, let us look to these schools for inspiration as we champion education as the foundation of a brighter future for every child.”

“These schools represent the ever-growing role educators play in the lives of our communities, students and families,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “While they are celebrated for the academic progress of their students, the success extends beyond grades and assessments. These educators and school staff serve as inspiring examples of the caring adults that support our children. We are humbled by their commitment to the communities they serve and their dedication to excellence in education.”

The three schools in the Mountain State are among 356 that make up the 2024 cohort of National Blue Ribbon Schools.
