
Nitro High School placed first during the Region 3 competition of the 2025 Academic Showdown at West Virginia State University.
Institute, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) and West Virginia State University welcomed 10 teams to the Region 3 competition of the 2025 Academic Showdown. Nitro High School (Kanawha County) placed first, and Braxton County High School Team 2 placed second, earning both teams a chance to compete in the finale in Charleston on April 30 – a first for both schools.
Participating schools included:
- Braxton County High School
- Charleston Catholic High School
- George Washington High School
- Nitro High School
- Sissonville High School
- South Charleston High School
- Albans High School

“The Academic Showdown allows students to demonstrate their depth of knowledge on a range of subject matter while showcasing their ability to think quickly on their feet,” said State Superintendent of Schools Michele L. Blatt. “Congratulations to Nitro High School and Braxton County High School for earning their first appearance in the finale. Every team’s dedication to preparing for the competition represents the immense talent and potential our students possess.”
The Showdown is a partnership between the WVDE, the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission, the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and West Virginia Public Broadcasting.
