Frametown Elementary School First Place Winners
Charleston, W.Va. – The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) welcomed elementary and middle school students to the third annual Fit+Active Schools Face-off today at the West Virginia Culture Center. This event provided students an opportunity to develop team building and goal-oriented communication skills through rounds of physically challenging exercises that encouraged students to live healthy, active lifestyles.
For the third consecutive year, Frametown Elementary School from Braxton County placed first in the elementary school division. West Teays Elementary from Putnam County placed second and Richmond Elementary from Kanawha County placed third.
In the middle school division, Teays Valley Christian Middle School from Putnam County won first place honors. Peterstown Middle School from Monroe County placed second and Roosevelt Middle from Mason County rounded out the honors with third place.
Students from across the state have trained to be among the teams competing in this event since January. PK-12 Academic Support Coordinator Josh Grant created the competition workout for elementary school teams while middle school students developed their own routine for the competition. Teams were scored on their form, intensity, rhythm, stamina and transitions between workouts.

The judge’s panel consisted of representatives from SHAPEWV, CrossFit Coal, West Virginia Grind and West Virginia University (WVU).
“The Fit+Active Schools Face-off is an example of supporting the whole child through promoting physically engaging activities. It reminds students and families alike that physical activity can be fun,” said State Superintendent of School Michele L. Blatt. “I am thankful that such an event exists for our students because it strengthens their teamwork skills and boosts their self-confidence.”
Ben Franklin Career Center medical assisting students measured participating students’ vital signs between competitions and taught them how to understand the readings. Additionally, Raze WV provided students and families with vape prevention educational resources and Valley Magic Jump Rope Team from Valley of Barboursville Elementary School provided an exhibition performance during intermission.
