Coding at Elk Elementary Center

At Elk Elementary Center in Charleston, West Virginia, coding is infused into all aspects of instruction. It is changing the face of teaching and learning at the school.

Therapy Bus

In order to meet the growing social-emotional needs of its schools, the Kanawha County retrofitted a school bus that now travels throughout the region to schools and provides specialized support to students.

Career Technical Education Signing Day

Students in Career Technical Education (CTE) automotive programs participated in the WVDE’s inaugural CTE Signing Day. Each was offered and accepted a job at a Dutch Miller car dealership in the Charleston/Huntington area complete with a signing bonus and their own set of new tools for the job.

Active Learning

Ruffner Elementary students get up out of their seats to learn as a part of their active learning program. From math to English Language Arts and more, students move as they gain critical content knowledge.

2019 Digital Learning Day (#DLD2019)

Students at Pinch Elementary spent Digital Learning Day 2019 with a partner school that visited them to participate in a peer learning experience. Pinch students taught the guests about their favorite educational apps. As students-turned-teachers, the students were able to build their confidence while sharing important skills and instruction.

Reverse Job Fairs

A unique twist on the traditional job fair brought CTE students and business representatives to CTE centers across the state as part of eight Reverse Job Fairs. The fairs were a part of a partnership between the West Virginia Department of Education and the West Virginia Development Office.

Dunbar Intermediate Expo Day

This is school is experiencing a decrease in absenteeism and behavior issues since implementing dedicated time for inquiry-based learning that is driven by student interest.
