Forum Opening: Overview of the Instructional Support Professional Learning Forum

Presenter: Dr. Jan Barth, Assistant State Superintendent, Division of Teaching and Learning, WVDE, with special remarks by State Superintendent Clayton Burch
Description: This general session will include opening remarks by State Superintendent Clayton Burch. This session also will provide an overview of the Instructional Support Professional Learning Forum and include an emphasis on the importance of addressing students’ social/emotional well-being as well as providing meaningful student engagement activities, regardless of whether learning takes place through in-person, remote, or blended learning.

Presenter: Christy Schwartz and Rebecca Lewis, Marshall University June Harless Center
Description: Virtual comprehension instruction can be challenging as teachers struggle with decisions about where to start and what to include in their limited instructional time. Participants in this session will learn how to engage Grades 3-5 students with integrated reading and writing lessons that focus on improving comprehension using grade-level content and rich texts. Tips for increasing interaction, ensuring learning retention and aligning digital and print resources will help teachers maximize the effectiveness of their remote learning environments.
